History of Rides & Reins

Slinger, WI Therapeutic Riding Stable

In 1998, Mequon stable owner Don Elias leased his arena and some of his horses to a group of therapists to work with special needs children and adults. Don saw how his horses helped children with a variety of handicaps to improve their strength, balance, mobility and outlook on life.

Don had seen a number of children and adults turned away because of their inability to pay for this service. In 1999, Don sold his Mequon farm and moved to the town of Polk, to a 45 acre farm outside of Slinger, WI. With the lower taxes, lots of pasture for his horses and cooperation from the town of Polk, Don was able to start up Rides & Reins. Rides & Reins was started with the purpose of providing therapeutic riding at a cost parents / guardians could afford, and for seven years this service was provided at no fee. In July 0f 2007, Don had to institute a small fee to help cover some of the increasing costs.

Why Therapeutic Horseback Riding?
A child who participates in therapeutic horseback riding can experience physical, emotional, and mental rewards. Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the riders body in a manner similar to the way a person walks, riders with physical disabilities often show improvements in flexibility, balance, and strength.

Not only does therapeutic riding offer physical benefits to students, but also psychological benefits. The rider feels a sense of achievement that often enhances motivation towards recovery. It also builds concentration skills.

Individuals having mental or emotional disabilities often form a unique relationship with a horse that can lead to self-confidence, patience, and increased self-esteem. Medical professionals, as well as the American Physical Therapy Association, recognize the positive qualities of therapeutic horseback riding.
